The Dilemma Boards

As part of the Big Conversation, students chose what they thought the best solution to a problem or issue would be from four options. The schools taking part in this activity were:

Corby Community, Kingswood, Huxlow and Lodge Park

Students' responses to the questions are given below:

1. What should be done about hunting with dogs?

Ban all hunting: 60%
Ban hunting for some animals (hare, stags) but not foxes: 25%
Leave things as they are: 10%
Allow hunting under license to stop abuse: 5%

2. Should students pay some of the costs of their University course (tuition fees)?

Yes, but only after they pass the course and according to their ability to pay: 41%
Yes, as above but also grants should be given to students from low income families: 48%
No, the costs should be paid by raising the taxes for all: 9%
No, the costs of universities should be reduced by cutting the number of students: 2%

3. What should be done about cannabis?

Legalise it for medical use only: 49%
Legalise it: 29%
Keep it illegal but with softer penalties: 13%
Keep it illegal but with harsher penalties: 9%

4. What should be done about anti-social behaviour by young people?

Tougher penalties on those who do it: 61%
Make it harder to do, CCTV cameras, block off alleyways, harden targets: 20%
Provide more leisure facilities to keep young people occupied and off the streets: 18%
Make parents of the young people go to parenting classes: 1%

5. At what age should young people be able to vote?

Leave it at 18: 53%
Raise it to 19 or 20 or 21: 21%
Lower it to 16: 19%
Lower it to 17: 7%

6. What should be done about genetically modified crops?

Allow them if science proves they are safe / Ban them if science proves they are unsafe: 86%
Ban them: 11%
Allow them: 3%

7. Should young people 16+ be paid to stay on at school?

No: 66%
Yes: 27%
Yes, but only if they turn up: 5%
Yes, but only if they pass their course: 2%
